Video: The Modus Tollens of Tory Defence
Do you remember the Modus Tollens, a sequence of questions that allows one to deduce a statement, just by asking if it is true or not? The sentence is formed as follows:
(P & Q) = (not P) or Q
Where P and Q are the premises. It is quite easy to remember that the Modus Tollens ends in a logical conjunction (that is, &) so it may be helpful to remember that.
Here is an example:
What does not strike you as unusual about the following statement: "Everything that is, is a product of the past"?
The answer is:
That is because every present thing is either a product of the past or of something else (that is, not a product of the past).
So, everything that is now, must either have been a product of the past or of something else. If it were a product of the past, it would be the past. If it were a product of something else, then it must be the product of something else or a product of the past. So, the only thing that is not a product of the past is the present thing.
If you are convinced of this, then you may ask: Is there a present thing? If you do not know, then you may try to find out by asking the following question:
If there is a present thing, what is it?
If you do not know, then you may assume that it is one of the following things:
